From 21 to 26 January 2012, Christie’s Rockefeller Plaza will host a series of exhibitions and auctions dedicated to Old Master and Early British Paintings and Drawings. The sales will present superb works, including paintings from Northern Europe, Spain, Italy and France, spanning five centuries. 

The numerous highlights from this sale include an exquisite tondo painting of The Virgin Mary nursing the Christ Child from circa 1492-1494 by Hans Memling, one of the very few works by this artist remaining in private hands, and a dazzling, light-filled oil sketch of The Arrival of Henri III at the Villa Contarini painted circa 1744-1745 by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, an historic work made to commemorate an historic event. The sales are also distinguished by the inclusion of works by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Frans Hals, Thomas de Keyser, Gerrit Dou and Giuseppe Arcimboldo that are either fresh to the market, having come to light again after generations, or have recently been authoritatively reattributed. 


Hans Memling

Peintre de réputation de son vivant, tant à Bruges qu'en Italie, en Allemagne ou en Angleterre, puis oublié pendant plusieurs siècles, Hans Memling a été redécouvert au début du xix^e siècle par les Allemands, notamment par Schlegel. Apprécié des foules, mésestimé par les historiens, il occupe une place particulière parmi les primitifs flamands. Héritier de Rogier van der Weyden, il incarne un juste milieu, une sorte de classicisme qui émeut par sa simplicité et sa finesse. Son art excelle dans deux domaines : la sérénité et la suavité. C'est ce qui fait que deux de ses tableaux sont les plus authentiques : La Vierge parmi des Saints et l'Adoration des Mages, tous deux conservés dès leur réalisation à l'hôpital Saint-Jean, de Bruges.

Adding to the occasion, Christie’s will hold a new sale, The Art of France, at 2pm on January 25, focusing on French 18th century painting and including a rich selection of works by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, among others.
