GRIS, VAN GOGH, SIGNAC & MIRÓ LEAD CHRISTIE’S AUCTIONS OF IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERN ART & ART OF THE SURREAL IN FEBRUARY 2012

The Impressionist and Modern Art and The Art of the Surreal Evening Auctions will take place on 7 February 2012 at 7pm with a pre-sale estimate of £86,205,000 -127,090,000 (corresponding estimate in 2011: £73.8-109 million). Combined with the Impressionist, Modern and Surrealist works which will be offered in Living with Art – A Private European Collection (please click herefor separate release), the total value of art offered in the Evening Sales between 7 and 9 February is £97,761,000-145,090,000.

Heralding the final portion of The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor landmark series of sales, a formidable group of 38 pictures from the iconic actress’ collection will be offered between 7 and 8 February led by Vue de l’asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Rémy, 1889, by Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890). This historic painting encapsulates the artist’s original and unique vision and is estimated to realise between £5-7 million.

The leading highlight of the sales is Le livre, an important Cubist still life painted by Juan Gris (1887-1927) between 1914 and 1915, a key date in the artist’s oeuvre (estimate: £12-18 million). This work was exhibited in the major post-war exhibition Cubisme at Galerie de France, Paris, in 1945.The Art of the Surreal is led by an extremely rare early work Painting-Poem (“le corps de ma brune puisque je l’aime comme ma chatte habillée en vert salade comme de la grêle c’est pareil”), 1925, which is the most significant Surrealist painting by Joan Miró (1893-1983) to be offered at auction in the last decade (estimate: £6-9 million).

Londres. Un importante bodegón cubista del pintor español Juan Gris y una pintura-poema de su compatriota Joan Miró serán las dos principales atracciones de una substasta de arte moderno e impresionista que prepara para el próximo 7 de febrero la casa Christie's en Londres.

Le livre, presentada por los organizadores como "una obra de transición clave" de Juan Gris (1887-1927), se pondrá a la venta por entre 12 y 18 millones de libras (18.4-25.6 millones de dólares).

Pintado en París entre finales de 1914 y principios de 1915, el cuadro fue exhibido por última vez en una gran retrospectiva del artista organizada en 2005 en el Museo de Arte Reina Sofía de Madrid.

En la misma velada, se pondrá bajo el martillo una de las pinturas-poema de Joan Miró (1893-1983), Le corps de ma brune puisque je l'aime comme ma chatte habillée en vert salade comme de la grêle c'est pareil por un precio estimado entre 6 y 9 millones de libras (9.2-13.8 millones de dólares).

Le corps de ma brune..., descrito como "la obra surrealista de Miró más importante que sale a subasta en la última década", es una de los cuadros destacados de la serie que hizo Miró fusionando el dibujo con la escritura en 1925, y pertenece a un coleccionista privado neoyorquino.

En total, en esta velada saldrán a la venta obras por valor de al menos 86 millones de libras (132 millones de dólares), entre ellas también un Van Gogh, Vue de l'asile et de la chapelle de Saint-Remy (1889), valorado en hasta 7 millones de libras, y un Dalí, L'automobile fossile du Cap de Creus(1936), estimado en hasta 1.8 millones de libras.
